First thing you have to do is the right research. And that doesn't cost anything. When it comes to professionally prototyping or patenting (or otherwise protecting your idea) yes, you do need to invest in moving your idea forward. Do it the right way though, and make sure your idea is commercially viable, and you just may persuade others to invest in your idea.
