U.S. promo and shortened version of this classic track. Sounding a bit like A Whiter Shade of Pale but a million times better. A classic British record of the time about working for nothing and questioning life. Sad song.

  • Would anyone be kind enough to help me with a couple of the lyrics? What does he sing after "sees his children tucked in bed"? "He's a man that..." is all I can understand. Also, the last two lines of the song sound like this to me, but I think I'm wrong: "Another week of grunt and grind/

Another week's paycheque to find" Could anyone tell me what they actually are? I've been listening to this song over and over and I can't find proper lyrics anywhere.

  • @Mikhaila nope me neither. The first words you ask about, sound like "he's the man that gets them fed" ? Still can't work out the last words.

  • There was a video of "them" (the real record was played by The Fleur De lys who refused to promote it so a band was "assembled") on "Beat Club" but I see it's been yanked down, as usual.

  • @Wilthomer66 wow, i will have to try and find that somehow. cheers for that.

  • @Mikhaila he's the man that gets them fed

  • I always thought the words were:-

Sees his children tucked in bed, he's the man that gets them fed. &

Another week of graft and grind, another weeks HP to find.

but I could be wrong. I'll email Rod Brosse to check.

  • @inshreds45 I agree with you. Perhaps my favorite song from the 60's besides Maybe done by Janis Joplin. I like the longer version of this song.

  • it's 'graft' and grind!

  • Wouldn't say it's a million times better than Whiter Shade of Pale, though a very similar chord sequence. It is a good one. Have it in my box of 45 RPM records.

  • @Mikhaila Last line (in this shortened version is) "Another week of GRAFT and grind / Another week's HP to find!"

Graft being hard manual work - HP is short for Hire Purchase; where the working class could obtain luxury goods by paying in installments

  • Its actually "another week of graft and grind"

  • @Mikhaila It's "See's his children tucked up in bed, he's the man that gets them fed." The second part you mention is "Another week of grunt and grind, another week's HP to find." Ok?

(HP was short for Hire Purchase which was stuff on credit!)
