A friends friend let us into an abandoned wing of the Grand Palais. There were empty spaces, as if abandoned at short notice, unreasonably high ceilings. The perfect place for the Fleet Foxes.

if anyone has the most control over the tempo i would say robin does with the rhythm guitar part.
can't blame the percussionist because he's playing eighth notes with the tambourine for most of the song...that'll tire someone out and slow down the tempo for sure. im sure that he's a decent timekeeper otherwise he wouldn't be the drummer in a band...that's kinda their main role.
these guys are so great, but if i had to be perfectly honest , i'd say that the tempo is always all over the place. it's pretty obvious in lot of their performances, not just this one. my guess would be that their drummer/perc. who is an excellent singer/songwriter in his own right, is a slightly unpolished timekeeper.
i do say this as a fan and a huge admirer of their music.
4:49 - 5:08 why is this so awesome? it brings out an emotion that I've never felt before. it feels like depression, but it has even more hope and love mixed into it. I can't quite properly explain, but this song has done something to me that I don't think anything else can do. I always picture myself in a dead forest on the cusp of winter and spring running for my life...does someone know what this could mean?
