Silly Wizard: 10 The Broom O' the Cowdenknowes (Caledonian Hardy Sons)

Lyrics:

How blithe each morn was I tae see
My lass came o'er the hill
She tripped the burn and ran tae me
I met her wi' good will
CHORUS:
Oh the broom, the bonnie, bonnie broom
The broom o' the cowdenknowes
Fain would I be in my own country
Herding my father's ewes
Hard fate that I should banished be
Gone way o'er hill and moor

Because I loved the fairest lass
That ever yet was born
CHORUS
Farewell, ye cowdenknowes, farewell
Farewell all pleasures there
To wonder by her side again
Is all I crave or care

  • what a great live band they were!

  • 1976. No pubs open on Sundays in Edinburgh. Had to go to a hotel or a private club for a drink with my pals. Two young sisters performed this beautiful song every Sunday afternoon as part of their set in a hotel on Mayfield Road. Just one of those songs that capture a place and a time.....running cross-country races all over the east of Scotland, brilliant nightlife down the Grassmarket, great friendships......left Scotland in 1982, but will never forget it.

  • Oh, I just love this beautiful old Scottish song.

  • Hey - THANKS for posting this! My favorite Silly Wizard tune -- hadn't heard it in an age. :)
