someone please explain what the characters in the first 50 seconds were indended to be? I've seen them a few times in various Python scetches but I don't get the joke. Village idiot?

They're called the Gumbys. They appear regularly in Python works, always wearing du rags, sweater vests, lederhosen, suspenders, rain boots, and a Hitler mustache. They are also always named Gumby. For example, in one episode, one is named "Professor R. Gumby".
