For the past two years, a stretch of unmatched dominance reflected by its NCAA-record 77 consecutive victories, the UConn womens basketball team had been perfection personified.
But the Huskies, who stormed their way to their seventh appearance in the NCAA championship by an average winning margin of 41.6 points, were far from perfect in last nights title game at the Alamodome. Still, UConn overcame all its imperfections — a season-low 32.8 shooting percentage, including 17.2 percent in the first half that resulted in a tournament-record and school-history low 12 points — to score a 53-47 victory over Stanford, the last team to beat the Huskies, two years ago in the semifinals of the Final Four.
The UConn Huskies had taken the court in San Antonio looking to become the greatest team in the history of womens basketball. They were going to stretch their record winning streak to 78 games and win their second straight championship. They were going to put their sport on the national sports map.
