This Irving Berlin gem was featured in "The Great Gatsby" (1974), starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. I wish I knew name of the vocalist who made it the theme of this remake of the Alan Ladd version in the 40's...I thought it might be Nick Lucas, who was featured on the soundtrack throughout...but maybe not. I recorded this as a multi-track version with two acoustic guitars - a 1958 Gibson J50 model and Taylor 710 Rosewood for different timbres, with the vocal coming across as a little morose. Probably due to the fact that I did it in three in the morning and I had to go to work at dawn to continue a computer system project...(snore)...

  • John you have a wonderful voice! Thank you for the good word re: the profile. I like your choice of songs-I'm subscribing to you. Best wishes, Maya

  • Thank you so much for the kind words, Maya. This Berlinesque classic is kind of out of character for me...I'm not a very blues-oriented kind of guy. Nothing like striving to insulate oneself against the vagaries of the external world, 'tis true?. Pollyanna John

  • Very lovely rendition. Thank you posting this all time favorite.

  • Thank you for the generous accolade, jsb. I would hope that Irving's contribution will sustain through the ages. Cordially, John

  • When I am a bit nervous and tired and blue, II surely will listen to this song John. Thank you.

  • All three at once? Hope those three emotions don't happen often, Astrid. Thanking you, John

  • on a nut about this song tonight and i ambled from version to version on youtube (with no one comparable to sinatra's) only to happen upon your heartfelt rendering ... and it's remarkable. and the vocals are not morose but rather, as the lyrics demand, only careful, which adds to the flavor if you ask me. congratulations. superb guitar work as well, resonant with nostalgia.

  • Beautiful song. It goes with the pictures.

  • This song has always been one of my favorites. I love Jolson's, and Sinatra's versions, and of course William Atherton's, and now I can add yours to my list of favorites. Beautifully done, John! 5 stars, and favorited! :)

  • The singer in the 1974's The Great Gatsby is William Atherton. You can check in my channel my version of this song. Nice singin' though
