Bo was coached by Bill Taylor, a tireless critic of bowling's adoption of the lighter plastic pins. You can google his articles, like "Warning: SSC is Bowling's Cancer." Very provocative stuff about score inflation.

The Pro pins weighed as much as the pins we used in our average bowling centers. Watch the telecasts from pre-1985. Some have pins as light as 3 pound 2 ounces. They produced lots of mixing strikes and some messengers. After that, the minimum weight was 3 pound 6 ounces. That's the weight of today's pro pins.
