One bright morning late in May..

A secular motet from the Monpellier manuscript. The lower part is the Gregorian chant melody Haec dies and the upper is a pastoral tune. with a French text.

I play it on an early renaissance type instrument by vd. Voort and also the recorder (Mollenhauer). Still waiting for a good medieval instrument.

My edition is Minsterels 2, cambridge university press.

  • Montpellier manuscrit H.196 was composed probably near Paris between 1260 and 1280. It is preserved in Montpellier medecine university school and contains 345 folios in 8 sections. "Hui main au doz mois de May" is the piece n°184 and a two voices mottetum. Those pieces are multivoices (two or three) mottetum and conductus.

Lyrics and midi files of some pieces are available on the site " instrumentsmedievaux . org " and original fac simiile on site " manuscrits . biu - montpellie r. fr "
