A short movie about the udu project started by Eugene Skeef. The project is a global initiative to celebrate the creative invention of the Igbo women of Nigeria and to raise awareness of and support for these skilled but impoverished potters and their communities. The udu has become an internationally popular musical instrument, but the rewards from its exploitation do not benefit its originators. Visit Eugene's website at www.eugeneskeef.com or send an email to eugeneskeef@googlemail.com for more information on the udu project and to buy udus.

  • Yes indeed, it was just such an inspiring time! I'm living in Wales, and just finishing a new CD. Ill send you a copy if you like! So great to hear from you. love to you and yours from Erin ps where can I find an udu?

  • Thanks again for your comments. Maybe I'll visit you one day soon with my family, as we love taking breaks there. I would love to help you with an udu from my project, but my busy life has forced me to slow down on the udu making front. The best short term solution would be to order one from the usual commercial sources like LP or even bettr from an Igbo person who runs a company you can find if you google afro ryhthms udu

    Stay well

  • Hi Eugene: what a lovely video, and instrument. Women in Gambia used to play a water-filled calabash. There is no end the beauty of Africa and her intruments. Stil playing mbira. much love from Erin

  • Hi Erin - What a lovely surprise, my sister. All the beautiful memories come back to me of the great creative times we had together at Oval House. Where are you now, and how can I hear the music you're making? Love and peace.

  • Eugene,

It's great to see you making the world a better place with your beautiful and special gifts. I am so excited for you and send you and your family many warm smiles from Canada where you are missed.

I'm currently in Montreal, breathing in the energy and loving every minute of it! You must get yourself here sometime. Montreal would love you.

    Best of luck! : )

    Rozalind

  • Thank you very much for your comment, Rozalind. I think of you and your beautiful, soulful music all the time. keep singing those songs that flow from you like a free river. Let no boulder impede the flow of your creative spirit.

    All the best

    Eugene :)

  • i am an igbo person coming from onitsha in anambra state and in my village people still make the Udukene (Udu) for me its good to see people acknowledging the roots of these instruments and their heritage but i still see foolish white people going on about it as if they made this instrument through invention they need to strat acknowledgingPUBLICALLY that this is an IGBO intsrument and played by the women! .........thank you Eugene

  • I'm glad to see you're trying to use this project to better the people who are the source of the instrument. Being of Ibo descent, a Nigerian & an African I am often saddened that so many of our inventions and creations are use in "popular" culture but never benefit the impoverished people who invented them. Thank you.

  • It's a great world if you know where to look. Love and light!

  • There is so much to this Udu musical instrument!!!!!

  • Thanks hamattan! Any one that is questioning the roots of this Udu instrument should take a trip to Igboland and ask the women there how it is made! There are many versions viz, some are played with a table tennis bat-like animal skin fan. This is used to strike the mouth while the other hand will be used to regulate air intake or escape from the side hole. This one is lap carried. Another very much bigger one is just placed on the ground and struck with a much bigger padded bat-like fan.

  • Damn the movie was crappy edited but it actually said something.

  • hello again. I have a few tracks on myspace, my band name is tapiti. the fourth one called elephant is really under the influence of that haunting tune you useds to play on the piano, remembering south africa. much love erin

  • Do come and visit, itd be great. Many thanks and hasta luego.
