@jarileigh, Elton wrote the melody, lyrics wrote Gary Osborne.

Elton didn't write the song, and he only sung about women in 1980, etc he was in the closet big time, and I think Bill was very happy that his sister inspired a song

True, but it was written for Jeannie Beatle,a gymnast who was 18 around the time the song was written

Jeannie was a gymnast, Elton dated her brother Bill who was a ballet dancer, the song is about "Little Jeannie" who was small even for a gymnast, and perhaps referring to Bill

And I want you to be my acrobat, I want you to be my lover
Oh there were others who would treat you cruel
And oh little Jeannie, you were always someone's fool..
I'd hazard a guess that "I want you to be my acrobat" refers to the attributes that a fine circus acrobat/performer possesses and how watching them can mesmerize one as to their outstanding litheness and flexibility and that just watching them can make one's heart flutter..or something like that..

I take it that he sees his old lover from yrs ago, Jeanie, married to someone else...and she has the house, the life, the whole "white picket fence" thing but she's still a little wild and crazy and takes chances with her "perfect" marriage... just a thought.
