@historybuff5341: yes, but that's not fair, because the British empire has had centuries to reform itself, while the CS had less than four years. You can't simply say the CS was 'evil' because you have no idea what the future of slavery in the CS would entail after the war, the CS could have abolished it very easily. Also, don't be so quick to think the US was good b/c it had no slavery, because it did have slavery...In fact NJ had slaves during the war.

Actually austenboston, IMPO yes, The British EMpire was a "bad" nation. From Slavery to the conquest of other cultures and nations. Now the Modern U.K. is pretty great. But The British Empire, no no.

As a historybuff and (if college goes as planned) future historian, the only fault I can find with The C.S.A. is slavery. Apart from that they were a completely legitimate nation that had the right to leave The Union. However despite this, their one flaw (slavery) greatly outweighed their goods. So all in all, The C.S.A. was both good (40%) and bad (60%)

Sorry, I had to give my little lecture. ^_^.

On a side note this is a great rendition of Bonnie Blue Flag.

yes, but Britain had slaves as well, does that make them a "bad" nation?

The truth is, in time the C.S.A would have abolished slavery, but it would have been a gradual withdraw to ensure the Southern agrarian-plantation society didn't collapse, as it did with the Reconstruction.

That really isnt far off if wrong at all.there was a comment by Shelby Foote(Noted Historian)he felt that the North faught almost or so it would seem as if its full ability had not been taxed-it was if they never had to bring that other arm out from behind its back

I love this rendition of the Bonnie Blue Flag! I also really liked the movie Gods and Generals. I thought it was a great movie. I wish they would make The Last Full Measure and finish out the book series. Thanks for posting this.

Knot, that is simply NOT TRUE. Slavery had nothing to do with Virginias, North Carolina's, Tennessee, Georgia, and Arkansas' reason for seccession. It could have been avoided but Abe Lincoln sent telegrams to each state asking them to help put down the rebellion in South Carolina and they refused. So Abe sent second telegrams stating that by not complying they have chosen to inaugurate civil war. The North could have avoided further states seceding if they would've negotiated.
