Early experimental film spanned a wide range of artistic movements, particularly in the 1920s, propelling the newfound medium into the 20th century. Movements such as Dadaism, Surrealism, and Cubism coincided with the development of the motion picture creating the Avant-Garde in film. Hans Richter was a major proponent of the development of film through his use of experimental techniques. One of his primary works, considered by some to be the first Avant-Garde film in existence, is a film entitled Rhythmus 21. This film utilizes GEM for histogram analysis and PD for sound creation (score by Andrew Colella).
