  • IRV is not a majoritarian system. It only ensures that the winner is preferred by a majority to at least ONE opponent. In the 2009 Burlington, VT mayoral race, the Progressive won, but voters preferred the Democrat to the Progressive by 54% to 46%. Also, with 4 or more candidates, it's possible for IRV to elect a candidate who would not have even made it into the second round of a traditional runoff.

    Score Voting and Approval Voting are simpler and far more democratic systems.
