Forget American Idol! The real competition is happening in Russia: Eurovision 2009!!!

For those who don't know, Eurovision is best described as a combination of American Idol, Gay Pride Week, Dancing with the Stars, The Oscars, The Tonys and The Olympics combined into one -- x 100 in faaabulousness. Over 40 countries compete, including strangely, Israel. And national pride is at stake. The event launched ABBA, which won for Sweden with its song, Waterloo. Celine Dion (representing Switzerland in 1988) and Olivia Newton-John (representing UK in 1974, finishing in 4th place to ABBA's win) are two other notable contestants.

While many contestants sing in their native language, English is by far the most popular language. ABBA, for example, sang Waterloo in English and won. A few contestants have even sung in multiple languages and some artificial languages.

  • Dude...

So which show is watched by more people AND more countries? WHile Am Idol hasn't been around as long, do you really think the biggest winners so far: Carrie Underwood, Chris Daltrey and Kelly Clarkson -- or any future winner -- will have the longevity and international cultural impact of ABBA, Celine Dion or Olivia Newton-John?

I bet you're a proud member of Taylor Hick's Soul Patrol...

  • Hey spongebob, What's the matter? Afraid of diversity and innovation? Or are you afraid that your latent homosexuality would surface amidst all that glitz?

BTW, TJ was right -- you do look cute in tight satin short shorts and a jockstrap.

FYI, Idol's ratings are dropping... Hah.

  • I dunno. I watched Eurovision and it was fun. Nothin' wrong with that. So what if Idol is the "U.S.'s number one show"??? Football or baseball is the US top sport, but soccer rules the world.

TJ was wrong; you really don't have the body to wear tighty whities. Sorry. Stick with the boxers, dude. And stop staring at him!

  • The Majority of the Countrys are singing now in english LMAO

Portugal is the best country in Europe we sing in our own Language;)

  • thumbs up if you watch this in 2011

    :-D XD

  • I simply don’t get how that retarted music-critic can claim that this contest only contains eurotrash-music when it’s probably one of the many song contests in the world that has the biggest diversity of music with all kinds of music-genres from many different cultures all over Europe! Sure, not all the songs can be good but most of my favourite songs have participated in the eurovision or some of the national finals. It’s really just an ignorant and bland accusation!

  • Idols is a Dutch production, and Eurovision is not to be compared with Idols. Eurovision is several times more professional.

  • 42 different songs to choose from and they show that shite from Holland... what's with you yanks?

  • Why are we making yet another comparison to the US?

  • This vid seems like it trashes Eurovision more than promotes it, thats just my opinion. But either way, i hope 2010 has some good artists, but there's so much confusion about who's sending who. Its left me lost. lol

Kind of random, but I'd think it would be interesting if American idol was expanded throughout the America's. Entries from countries like Canada, Brazil, the US, and Argentina would be interesting to listen to.

  • fuck you martin you are an ass hole
