That "popping" is called an Anti-Lag System or ALS. Sometimes also called a Misfiring System. Without going into too much technical detail, the system basically allows you to bring your turbo lag to a minimum. Therefore increasing turbo response time and helping your engine get back to it's normal, boosted engine output, rather than in the lag-time where boosted power cannot be made.
