Centuries of Jim Crow furthered the development of separate cultures called 'black' and 'white' in the US. The 'white' group has long appropriated and assimilated the best of what the 'black' group has produced, including music and even slang. The question is, can these cultural differences be celebrated instead of being used to fuel hate? I sincerely hope so. This is the 21st century - not the 19th - after all.

Yes, Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould's "Mismeasure of Man" made a powerful case for the end of "race" as a concept 35 years ago.

But look around. Do white people or black people seem ready to surrender that concept, whether or not it was invented and sustained by quasi science?

The Obama fist pound was cultural (ethnic), like so called "ebonics". Race still makes cultural differences.

Rather than declining, race seems a thriving concept, however unscientific, ideological or merely cultural.

I'm not familiar with that issue, and I don't teach my students politics just biology, but I make the point that we are all Homo sapians and discriminations are truely stupid because they are based on things like melanin or differences in base pairs in DNA
