Without a home, a job, or help, families living in the Chinandega garbage dump scavenge for plastic bottles and scraps of aluminum, which they sell for a pittance. The families suffer from skin and respiratory illnesses caused by the toxic environment, and they live in dilapidated shanties made from scraps of cardboard and tin found in the dump, which provide little shelter during the rainy season.
Our donors moved 50 of these families out of the dump and into sturdy cement homes in the thriving community of Villa Catalina, where they will receive medical care, education, and even micro-credit loans to start small businesses.
