Presenting your first Gearwire microphone shootout for 2010. This mic bout pits the classic Shure SM58 against the newest hand-held dynamic on the block, the Blue Encore 100. Both mics are priced identically, both are the product of companies that have already become legends. Which mic will emerge as the winner?

Well, neither, really. As you'll hear in the video, these mics sound very, very similar. In the end, it might come down to how each mic performs with your particular voice. . . or how important a plush mic bag is to you.

Bonus: watch all the way through to see the Encore 100 A-B'd with an Audix OM2. And stay tuned for the next video wherein we compare the Encore 100 to an SM57 on a Marshall 4x12.

  • do you use a EQ ? or just the direct input rec

  • I'd take the Audix. Filtering can be done down the signal chain. Shouldn't happen at the mic.

  • shure nailed it! Shure mics rules!!

  • View 9000!

  • SM58 sounds fuller and warmer... That's why it's still the standard after all these years...

  • you can get the blue encore 200 for the same price as the sm58 from some websites.

  • the sm58 and audix are much more forgiving on your voice. the blue is much clearer

  • he's singing is pretty decent, dont no what your problem is :O

  • In my opinion, the SM58 sounds best on your voice (when singing). I do like the encore mics, in general. Don't really like the Audix for you.
