On 4/11/09, starlings invaded the abandoned nest of Kay and Jay, the Tulsa red tail hawks, and while one worked on getting nest materials, the other cracked open one of the eggs and had a snack. (From the live cam at http://www.kjrh.com/content/news/hawks/default.aspx )
why did they abandon it? =S

We don't know for sure, but my best guess is that Kay hit the "eject" button because there wasn't going to be enough food for a nest full of hawks. Kay was often calling out, apparently in hunger, while she was incubating the eggs. The only times we saw Jay bring food to the nest, Kay pounced on it as if it were going to be her last meal.
She had to go out and hunt for prey herself. the day before she stopped incubating, she was gone for about 9 hours, while Jay sat on the nest.
