Ozzie NEVER specified what he did for a living on radio or TV; in their 1952theatrical feature "Here Come the Nelsons", for plot purposes, he was a junior ad executive. The film was primarily a "test" to see if people would accept the Nelsons on screen; they did, and the TV series went on the air in the fall of '52, while continuing their radio show for two more seasons. Ozzie always claimed the stories depicted on their program usually occured "during the weekend"...
This was the opening used for the show from 1958 to 1963. It used the original 1952 narration, but notice the edit right before Ricky's name. Now that he was grown, they didn't need "the irrepressible" before his name.
I should say recently retired in the first episode (which was a spin off their theatrical film HERE COME THE NELSONS, itself a spinoff of their radio show). The show ran for 14 seasons so he must have invested well.
The Nelsons play themselves. Ozzie was a recently retired band leader and Harriet was a recently retired singer/actress settling down in suburbia, as that's what they were in real life. Look on You Tube you'll find quite a few videos of them singing on stage in the earlier episodes.
