http://FWHIhelicopters.com Effective Translational Lift, Transverse Flow Effect, Translating Tendency, all things the examiner can very well ask! And he will ask at least one, if not all three on your Helicopter Private Pilot Checkride!

Hello everybody, Kenny Keller with Fort Wayne Helicopters and I wanted to give you a tip on something people get confused on their Check-rides.

The Three T's: Effective Translational Lift, Transverse Flow Effect, and Translating Tendency.

This is one of the ones that I have seen in a lot of years of teaching that always gets people confused in the heat of the moment of the Check-ride. They mess these up all the time. So I am going to give you just some real quick definitions to break them down.

Effective Translational Lift (ETL) is increased efficiency due to clean air coming into the Rotor System.

Transverse Flow Effect, we have clean air coming in so you have more lift in the front, less lift in the back. Due to Gyroscopic Procession, during a Helicopter Takeoff, the Helicopter wants to drift to the right and so we counter act with left cyclic.

The third one is Translating Tendency. It is the tendency of the Helicopter to drift to the right due to Tail-rotor Thrust. In the Enstrom particularly, the Rotor Mast is rigged slightly to the left to counteract that right hand drift.

So the Three T's, memorize these before you go to your check-ride because everybody gets three confused.

So if this helps please click the like button, and if you haven't been to our blog lately, you can check it our at http://FWHIhelicopters.com and sign up for our email list for all the new things that we have coming out, whole bunch of cool stuff. I'm going to give one little hint about a new website that is coming up, not going to give out too much on that yet, but it is going to be some exciting and cool stuff. Leave us some comments with feedback, that always helps too.

Thanks everybody, we will see you later!

  • If it weren't for X-plane, the simulator, I would know nothing about any of these principles..X-Plane does an amazing job simulating all of these tendencies.I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about how helicopters fly..I think the simplest way to explain translating tendency is to look at it as a propeller.

    Great video BTW.

  • These videos are great. Reading the RF Handbook, as well as these informative videos help in a great way. Thank you.

  • Great explanation!

  • Thank you for this video...tips like these are very helpful.

  • ...Also, aftr looking at it a few times.... you have great presentation. Very easy to hear what your teaching. Again, Great Job.
