THIS IS A RECORDING OF DRUMS IN A MIX USING THE GLYN JOHNS DRUM MICING METHOD

THE GLYN JOHNS DRUM MICING METHOD IS MICING AN ENITRE DRUM KIT WITH ONLY 4 MICS

GLYN JOHNS HAS WORKED ON SESSION WITH THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES, THE WHO AND LED ZEPPELIN TO NAME JUST A FEW

YOU MUST HAVE A GOOD SOUNDING ROOM AND PROPERLY TUNED DRUMS FOR THIS TO SOUND BEST

IT'S A QUICK AND EASY SET UP AND SOUNDS GREAT

1) Over (cardiod:panned Left) about 4"-6" above Floor Tom facing Hi-Hat across Snare. AKG PERCEPTION 100 CONDENSER USED

2) Over (cardiod:Panned Right) about 2'-3' above the kit facing between the toms and snare. AKG PERCEPTION 100 CONDENSER USED

3) Snare DYNAMIC SHURE SM 57 USED

4) Kick CONDENSER SHURE PG 52 USED

THE SONG USED IS A COVER OF TODD RUNDGREN'S "STRIKE" FROM THE ALBUM "ARENA"

PERFORMED BY JONATHAN RISEN

  • i am in a basement apartment, with about 7 foot ceilings. the room i'll be playing in is about 15ft. x 20ft. with furniture and other shit in it. do you think it will sound ok? i'll be using a 5-piece Shure set with 2 more for overheads.

  • @b0ssh0gg Try it out.......

  • Contrary to popular belief not everyone loves the Glyn Johns technique. The Eagles stopped recording with him after two albums because Don Henley did'nt like his drum sound.

  • I've only used it on a couple of songs and it's not bad for a minimalist set up, but if you want a big sound, the kind where the toms roll from the left to right speakers as well as the cymbals, you're not going to get that with this technique. I personally prefer the wide stereo sound myself, but thought this was good to experiment with

  • Wow! Awesome tones. I have just recently started to experiment with this placement technique, but it doesn't sound this good yet. What mics are you using in each position?

  • I'm actually experimenting and getting better sounds than this now, It depends on where your drums are sitting in the room, how the drums are tuned, and how dead the room is. The mics are listed on the video or in the summary on the side

  • @eastriver15 The Eagles are great band and I just saw them live and they were great. However, in terms of drum sounds, Zep and Stones had better drums sounds no?

  • Pitty your kit aint tuned, snare sound is terrible. You need a perfectly tuned kit in order to avail of the full potential of this method

  • Thanks! I got one of the guitar riffs backwards but it's not bad!

  • Great audio... all around!

    More TODD covers!

    You sound great, man!

    STRIKE!
