anyone explain to me why my rear left wheel turns slowly when the car is jacked up - idling - in neutral
And then when revved the wheel speeds up -still in neutral
Other wheel doesn't turn
I'm guessing it is to do with it being an open diff but my brain tells me that if the gearbox is in neutral, nothing should be turning/moving after the gearbox inc prop, diff, drive shafts, wheel!
@maersklandro Thanks for your reply that is very interesting. The box is a 5 speed manual, the gearbox would be a good 20/30 odd years old so could be worn. It had fresh oil about 4 years ago - 4000 miles ago.

Because of transmission losses. Gearbox internal friction bleeding torque from the input shaft to the output shaft despite no actual mechanical connection between the two in Neutral.
I'm guessing yours is a torque converter automatic?
If it's a manual transmission I'd look into an oil change, pronto. That much spin is indicative of poor oil, low oil lever &/or gearbox wear.

Cheers for the reply, yeah it'll be to do with it being an open diff, theres no binded brakes!! Cheers

the oil in the gear box will cause a drag around the other gears and turn the output shaft even though no gear is selected. the left wheel is probably a fluke down to ethier a brake bind on the rh side causing the diff to spin this side or the diff favouring the one side as i presume you dont have a lsd. hope this helps sorry for the spelling. nothing to worry about all in all.
