Baha'i LOTUS shaped temple, New Delhi. What an amazing, marvelous piece of modern architecture ... a place which only feeds powerful and peaceful vibration to every visitors (who come in thousands daily) to The Baha'i' Temple .
As could be seen from the photos (and video in other posting) the LOTUS temple resembles half-open lotus flower, afloat, surrounded by its leaves. Each component of the temple is repeated nine times. Flint & Neill Partnership of London were the consultants and the ECC Construction Group of Larsen & Toubro Limited were the contractors responsible for constructing the Temple, a leader in the construction industry and a Mumbai based engineering coglomerate.
I am mentioning this because when the temple was constructed I was working in this company in its corporate communication department and I had the pleasure to be part of publicising the architectural aspect of this beautiful structure. Mr. A. Ramakrishna, then Director of the Construction Group used to always with the media (at press conferences) about this marvelous structure in New Delhi. This was one of the beautiful structures that L&T built in those days. From that time onwards I had deep inclination to visit this temple because at that time I had seen only the beautiful photographs snapped then chief Photographer of L&T Mr. Jaswant Singh (if you want those photos ask the compnay pro at L&T). Those photos had been widely used in company's corporate brochures, L&T used to give the pictures of this beautiful edifice to media ...all because this LOTUS temple is truly a marvelous edifice and true creativity of architecture.
I happened to visit few days finally to snap the moment of sunset, post sunset, the termpetine que of silent visitors, the pool side view of the temple, the close view of its leaf, the NIGHT VIEW.... just prior to sunset and till night the PHOTOGENIC temples gives ample scope for geometrical photography.
It has a meditaion hall and before entry visitors are supposed to switch off cell and camera and are being requested to silently meditate for world peace....interestingly the vibration of the spiritual is such that there is no shouting or noise pollution everybody walk in and walk out move around silently.. where as if one walks into other tourist spots or some temples there is so much noise.......here one learns self discipline.
According to the Baha'i institute's website, before undertaking the design of the temple, the architect, Mr. Fariborz Sahba, had travelled extensively in India to study the architecture of this land and was impressed by the design of the beautiful temples, as well as by the art and religious symbols wherein the lotus invariably played an important role. He was influenced by this experience, and in an attempt to bring out the concept of purity, simplicity and freshness of the Bahá'í Faith, he conceived the Temple in Delhi in the form of a lotus.
All around the lotus are walkways with beautiful curved balustrades, bridges and stairs, which surround the nine pools representing the floating leaves of the lotus. The lotus has three sets of leaves or petals created out of thin concrete shells.
There is lot of geometry and it is a challenge or a learning spot for budding photographers. because of its geometrical designs, one has to perfectly set the camera to get the balanced and right perspective of measurement of the structure and its design patterns.
According to Baha'i institute's website, the beautiful concept of the lotus, as conceived by the architect, had to be converted into definable geometrical shapes such as spheres, cylinders, toroids and cones. These shapes were translated into equations, which were then used as a basis for structural analysis and engineering drawings. The resultant geometry was so complex that it took the designers over two and a half years to complete the detailed drawings of the temple.
As stated in the institute's official website, the complexity of the structure, and the very high standards of workmanship expected to be achieved, demanded a dynamic construction management with a high degree of innovativeness, team spirit and quality consciousness on the part of staff and workmen.
MAY I REQUEST all of you TO GO THRU A DETAILED HUGE PROJECT REPORT OF THIS MARVELOUS EDIFICE called Baha'i LOTUS SHAPED temple in New Delhi, instead my copying the text from their site. IT IS ALL THERE but worth reading.. who was the architecture, when it was built, why it was built.
WITH DUE CREDIT TO the Baha'i institute/movement you may link to this to know more about this TEMPLE of happiness.
