Coming off of a disappointing 3-2 game 2 overtime loss after a great effort. The Flyers found themselves in a "must win" situation early in the series. The Oilers on the other hand were looking to take a convincing 3-0 series lead. Edmonton came out firing in game 3 and took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Mark Messier and a demoralizing goal by Paul Coffey with only 9 seconds left in the period. The Oilers then stretched it to a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead on Glen Anderson's fluke breakaway goal 1:49 into the second.

With their backs against the wall, the Flyers began a comeback on second-period goals by Murray Craven and Peter Zezel. Early in the third the Flyers scored two tallies just 17 seconds apart by Scott Mellanby who tied the game and the shocker by Brad McCrimmon which put the Flyers ahead 4-3. For the remainder of the period, the Flyers gamely kept the Oilers potent offense at bay until Brian Propp's empty-net goal sealed a 5-3 win.

Until this point, no team in NHL history had ever rebounded from a 3-0 deficit to win a game in the Finals, and the Flyers won their first-ever playoff game after yielding a game's first three goals.

Most people remember the game 6 comeback as one of the best games in Flyers history. In my humble opinion, although game 7 was not riding on it, this game and the three goal comeback was better and no less dramatic since if they lost the series would have been 3-0. This game and it's comeback had greater historical significance on both a team and league level. It is debatable I suppose. Either way it is one of the best.

Please be sure to watch the rest of 1987 Finals highlight videos I have posted of you have not already . Please vote and comment on them all. It is my hope that one day this series will be released on DVD in its entirety. Maybe your comments and votes will help.

Enjoy

  • I was at this game with my dad. I was 9. Best game I ever went to, I can still remember all of the goals in my head. It's insane to watch this replay knowing I was there.

  • way to go beast..never forget ya bro!

  • The stuff of legends. Great video, music and all.

  • this was my favorite flyer team, they tried so hard... they should have won that year.... took the greatest team ever to 7 games..

  • This was probaly one of the greatest teams never to win the cup,tim kerr out with a torn shoulder, dave poulin playing with a flak jack to protect his broken ribs, mark howe playing with a heriated disk, sinasalo playing with a bum knee, that team showed so much heart and guts it was awesome.

  • PLEASE POST MORE!!!!

  • And even then it took probably five years or so for the NHL to truly start going downhill. Bettman inherited a GREAT product. Even he couldn't screw it up right away.

  • That's Gene Hart.

  • As I noted in it the 3-0 comeback for the win in game 3 was the first time in NHL history it was accomplished. That alone should put it in at LEAST the same regard as what they did in game 6. As I said, I think it was a better game and greater comeback from the dead. I don't know how they just did not pack it in after that third goal. They were playing arguably the best team in NHL history without their top goal scorer!

  • Glad you enjoyed them. Regarding game 3? You are preaching to the choir! I have been saying that and can't understand why everyone hoots and hollers about game 6. Game 6 was a great comeback. It certainly had a finality about it given that game 7 was riding on it and they were done if they lost. But if they lost game 3 they were just as done. By game 6 they had already proven to themselves they could come back since they had twice already. But down by 3 facing what they were? Just amazing!
