Gardening can be a very enjoyable hobby, but knowing when and how much to water can sometimes be frustrating. Here's an ingenious project that will make that part of the job very simple. Take two terracotta pots and put them together using construction adhesive. Then on the very bottom, take the hole that's in the bottom in the terracotta pot and put construction adhesive in there two, so no water can come through. Then take the saucer that would normally be under the terracotta pot and put that on backwards and glue that on also, and leave the very top hole open. Now notice what happens. You'll see that the outside of the terracotta pot is moist, that is because terracotta is porous and the water slowly seeps through it. Now, what you want to do is completely bury this underneath the ground, except for this very top part sticking out. Fill it up with water, and then it will keep your garden nice and watered. Then you just have to check on it maybe once a week, or maybe ever other week, just to make sure there is plenty of water in your terracotta pots.

  • The saucer needs a hole drilled in it to work, unless you find a very shallow clay pot such as for cactus dish gardens. This would work great in a raised bed, or in a huge patio planter. In some areas it would contribute to mosquito populations, though.
