At an average rate of $200 per night/per inmate, private prison operators profit over $5 billion a year. How do they do it? Like con-artists, they lure town councils and local government officials with promises of easy money and increased revenue. However, what they don't tell them is at what cost!
Littlefield, Texas found out the hard way. Private prison operators promised increased "product" (aka detained immigrants) and alleged prosperity for a town that was struggling with an economic crisis. Instead, what Littlefield got was a mega-complex private facility, an additional $10 million contractual debt, and a fleeing population.

First the extremist US Supreme Court called corporations "people." And now the corporate correctional industry calls real people "product." Maybe if each individual creates a tiny personal corporation, we citizens can convert ourselves from "product" back to "people."

There are things the government HAS to do because it's not profitable, and there are things the government has to do be cause it SHOULDN'T be profitable.
It doesn't take a lot of effort to figure out which one of those conditions private prisons contradict.

AMEN. I will have to remember that one. I have tried to study some generalities that make us "different". GOP- They see things in "black and white" (nuance confuses them and upsets them. Left- we can make fine distinctions. GOP - No shame. Left - shame. GOP- would rather see 100 innocents suffer than let one undeserved person "get away" with something. Left - would rather let 100 undeserved people "get away" with something than let one person suffer. GOP-master hypocrites.

Texas again. With Perry in charge not surprising. These people don't think. And the private prisons would jail their own Grandmother for profit.

GEO Group is certainly a rapacious corporation. Its prisons often stayed vacant for many years.Jena, Louisiana, closed thanks to loss of contracts due to its horrendous abuse of juveniles. Baldwin, Michigan was built to supposedly accommodate juvenile "superpredators" who simply didn't exist. Governor Debbie Granhold deservedly shut it down. GEO then hugely expanded it hoping for a federal detention contract, failing at that also. It complained that the feds weren't locking up enough immigrants.

Come on folks, this is an immigrant nation—always has been. Take pride in this. Open the borders and we shut down these sleaze-ball operations, shed our soul numbing obsession with nailing and jailing "illegals," save taxpayers god-zillions of dollars, restore some national sanity, renew a once-proud American sense of compassion and gain a resource of hard-working, would-be citizens—not unlike our ancestors who came to this land with hope in their hearts and promise in their future, jerry h
