Gray whales in Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California are being tagged with underwater microphones by researchers to better understand how these animals communicate with each other in lagoon environments. This iPhone video shows researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México placing a hydrophone on an adult female gray whale with suction cups and recovering it a few hours later using direction finding equipment. Researchers include Melania Guerra, Aaron Thode, Anaid Lopez, Delphine Mathias, and Steven Swartz. Special thanks to the Jacobs family and Eddie Kisfaludy of Oceans Aloft LLC for supporting this particular trip.
