He didn't quit. At least I hope not. I thought he was being the doctor to long :( I don't agree if that is the case.

No, but if you are going to watch it I would at least start at the 9th doctor and go on from that.

You guys need to stop thinking Eccleson is not the 9th Doctor ... John Hurt was almost full explained in the episode, so *shrugs*

It's more likely that John Hurt is the 9th incarnation of the doctor. But he's not "the doctor", which means Christopher Eccleston is still the real 9th doctor, but it also means he's the 10th incarnation, meaning that while Matt is the 11th doctor, he's the 12th incarnation.
That said, I think The Doctor has an infinite amount of regenerations, and we won't see him turning into the valeyard for a long time (I hope)!

You can start with the series starring the 9th doctor if you want. Everything from the 9th doctor and onward is essentially a reboot of the series. It still continues the story of the old series, but they take the liberty to explain everything all over again for the new viewers, and they even retconned a few bits.
Search for "Doctor Who 2005 series" in order to find the reboot series that starts with the 9th doctor.
