And now I understand why human advancement stopped around the 21st century.

This Troper is a series about TV Tropes and why those people who say dumb things in the library are probably from that website.

  • In case anyone reading these comments hasn't seen it yet, there is a TV Tropes page and a forum article on this series as well now.

And yes, they have latched on to the 'Plainwalker' characters and treated it seriously.

  • @Protectorett It is super serious man. The characters are the most god damn important part of the series! Who cares about these tropers or whatever!

  • It's really REALLY difficult to maintain this position after watching this video, but I stand by the idea that references, when used conservatively, naturally (no changing tone to make clear that you are quoting something), in context, and with people who can appreciate it, can actually be ok.

Of course, even at their best, references are shit compared to actual jokes and quick wits.

  • I said something popular on the internet in real life, I'm so cool and edgy and unique!

  • These people should get Wayne Dyer's Pulling Your Own Strings and take a close look at a chapter about quiet effectiveness. Saying because I think this relates to the matter at hand(not assuming it's automatically obvious).

  • @SpraxIAKS Hey man, I said references can be good. I just think they pale in comparison to actual jokes you actually had to think of on your own.

"Hey, this is sort of like that thing in that movie" is never as good as humorous and original content.

  • @321cheeseman Not really. A good reference can make or break a situation and being able to come up with one on the mark is comparable to quick wits.

  • "The cake used to be a lie, but then it took an EPICK ARROW TO THE KNEE, omg winsauce"

  • "This troper quoted a meme and it was so awesome I always wanted to do that and oh god I'm dying alone"

  • "anime club"

  • @321cheeseman

References are okay when they actually fit the situation at hand and don't come across as excessive or forced. Done wrong, they can be absolutely excruciating.

  • @TheEranster Well, he isn't funny, and that kind of awkward stupid thing is what the bad tropes latch onto like a lactating breast. Which they have never latched onto.

  • hey hey GUYS you have to come see THIS COMEDIAN you GUYS he gets up on stage and quotes anime for an entire hour-long set! i think this could be a NEW COMEDIC REVOLUTION you guys!

  • Do you have something against That Guy With The Glasses, or do you have something against tropers liking That Guy With The Glasses?
