"AFTER 50 YEARS, THELONIOUS' MUSIC HAS BECOME AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE JAZZ REPERTORY. AS SUCH, IT IS BY NOW, SUBJECT TO A MUCH FREER USE OF IT BY THE PLAYERS, SOMEWHAT AKIN TO THE TRADITIONAL OR CLASSIC SO CALLED 'DIXIELAND' SCHOOLS FROM NEW ORLEANS, CHICAGO, KANSAS CITY, NEW YORK, etc.

ROS AND I STARTED OUT PLAYING THAT WAY, AND MONKSILAND IS AN ORGANIC OUTGROWTH OF OUR OWN JAZZ HISTORY."
STEVE LACY 2/17/04
Here they perform Thelonious Monk's composition NUTTY.
"This performance of NUTTY has some usual Dixieland traits such as spontaneous horn riffing behind the soloist, and collective improvisation. For me, there's always been something Dixieland about Monk, colorful and high spirited composition and performance." Roswell Rudd 1/2/08

  • Dave sounds great!

  • I am so fortunate to have seen Steve on a few occasions, and got to talk with him one time. His opening delivery is so characteristic- a dry humor, yet warm and witty and generous. Steve was a true gentleman as well as a master musician and is so sorely missed.

  • Thanks for sharing, Verna

  • סטיב לייסי, זכרון צדיק לברכה

  • so nice---makes you sad and happy. Almost like steve was back playing dixieland, as a teenager again, full circle, and he 'moved on' very quickly after this. great playing by JJ, Betch, Dave and Roswell too--i played in Steve's Octet in 93--95--great times--best to all, tom varner

  • Yes , on the Impulse LP Live in San Francisco

  • Yep, one and the same. He and Lacy used to play Dixieland together in the 1950s, and they reunited off and on until Lacy's death.

  • this the same RUDD played wiv ARCHIE SHEPP?

  • thanks for the post. i am late seeing it. last time i spoke with steve he said this gig was a favorite- all his favorite people on the band stand. and when he said it with the smile, you could see death etched on his face. he died not long after. be well steve, we miss you
