I've considering trying that somersault many times...but I'd probably kill myself in the process!

@Tubalious14 If you got that from IMDB, I'm the one who posted that, and I got it a bit wrong. It was Julie Dawn Cole (who played Veruca) that thought Gene had really hurt himself, not Denise Nickerson (Violet). I realized that when I watched the movie (with the commentary, which is where Julie says it) again (and heard "I thought 'Oh my god, he's hurt!'" in Julie's umistakble British accent), and I've since corrected my mistake. Sorry for the confusion!

@AlchemysticAudio Thank you Capt. Obvious of the no shit division. Hehe just kidding. I agree completely.

Nobody had told the children anything about this scene nor of many others in the movie (Chocolate river, boat ride, wonka wash, and the ending) The girl who plays violet really thought Gene had hurt himself and filming would be halted for a few days. When he did the trick at the end it thrilled them all. :)

2:51 no one would have guessed that kid was the douchebag who was difficult to work with during the film. Out of all of the kids who make you believe that they really are spoiled brats in life.

Young Gene Wilder was godlike lol..

That was an idea from Gene Wilder to do this somersault (also his condition to work in this movie).

Wilder was initially hesitant, but finally accepted the role under one condition:
“When I make my first entrance, I'd like to come out of the door carrying a cane and then walk toward the crowd with a limp. After the crowd sees Willy Wonka is a cripple, they all whisper to themselves and then become deathly quiet.
...until I realize that I no longer have my cane. I start to fall forward, and just before I hit the ground, I do a beautiful forward somersault and bounce back up, to great applause!
