Frost Design's interactive art piece the "Flip Dot Wall"

Coined the "Flip Dot Wall", Frost Design created an interactive art piece that utilises over 9000 revolving dots to create unlimited animations. The wall is 5 metres wide and 6 metres high and illustrates images or text in either black or brilliant red. Based on the same technology commonly seen in airports or buses, one of its great advantages is that the piece can be programmed to carry a multitude of sequences -- some poetic, some factual, and some simply fun. It can change according to season, event or achievement, and can be adapted for functions in the foyer to become part of the entertainment. As the dots move through their paces they create a subtle audio ambience and air-movement that extends the experience beyond the visual. Depending on the transition affect and timing, the dots create an acoustic ripple, a loud bang or a soft flutter.

Designed by Frost, the Stockland Flip Dot wall was custom built by Salient Pty Ltd. The individual components were fabricated in America and shipped to Australia. Salient Pty Ltd developed and installed the operating software and Frost designed the launch, Christmas and Summer animations. Frost Design was also commissioned to create the Stockland Head office wayfinding and signage, construction hoardings and identity and environmental graphics for Stockland's Treehouse childcare centre.

All electronic design and software by A.D. Engineering Perth. The only component we required were the actual dots which were shipped from the USA. :)
