Is there a difference between massive riots and peaceful demonstrations or protests?

Fox Business News does an interview with Iceland's minister of finance, Gylfi Magnússon, while showing video footage of riots in Athens, Greece, while there were never any riots in Iceland due to the crisis, only loud demonstrations or protests where people were encouraged to show up banging on pots and pans from their homes to express their anger to a corrupt government.

Why sending mixed messages by showing false video and text blurs on the screen while the minster speaks about solving the problems peacefully and with dialogue?
