表面のカタチ作りから離れ、まるでカタチが存在しないかのようなデザインを考える。X-RAYの開発に当たったのは、au design projectより発表されたMEDIA SKINで、携帯電話のデザインの潮流を一変させた、プロダクトデザイナー吉岡徳仁。オリジナリティが感じられないデザインが主流となった現代の携帯電話に、新鮮で新しい­切り口を。そんな吉岡の意志が、透明なボディという斬新な発想を見出しました。たとえば葉の形状が、自然の摂理に基づくあらゆる理由によって成り立っているように、携帯電­話も複雑な機構や電子部品の組み合わせによって出来上がっている。その事実を、携帯電話にとって「自然」な状態として受け入れて、手に取る人の目にかすかに見せていく。そ­の視点が、単なる美しいデザインにとどまらない深みのある魅力をX-RAYに与えています。内面の精密なデザインを包み込む透明のボディも、上質に仕上げました。一見する­とプレーンな二つ折りのシルエットでありながら、そのたたずまいはじつに個性的。表面のなめらかな質感と深みのあるカラーが、大人の毎日にしっくりと馴染むような、どこか­落ち着きある雰囲気を、この携帯電話にもたらしています。Product designer Tokujin Yoshioka, who revolutionized mobile phone design with the au design project's MEDIA SKIN, assumed the mantle of X-RAY lead designer. He imagined a design freed from concern with surface shape construction, as though shape itself didn't exist. At a time when mainstream mobile phone design is so devoid of originality, X-RAY's promise of a fresh, new approach found its impetus in Yoshioka's novel idea of a transparent mobile phone body. Like the configuration of a leaf, formed through numerous causes based on the laws of nature, X-RAY is built as an assembly of complex mechanisms and electronic components. The fact of this is subtly revealed to the eye of the person who holds X-RAY and accepts its design as the natural state of the mobile phone. That perspective bestows upon X-RAY a penetrating allure that goes beyond beautiful design. The mobile phone's transparent body, which envelopes its internal precision build, evinces a high-end finish. Presenting a plain folding silhouette at a glance, its appearance is in fact truly individual. The surface's sleek texture and deep color bring to X-RAY an assured sense of collectedness that is warmly familiar to mature users.
