Anyone who's ever shopped for a used car has seen these words in classified ads: "LOW MILEAGE". But can you be sure the numbers on the dash are true -- or have they been rolled back to inflate the value of the car? Computer hackers know how to roll back even digital odometers, costing you big bucks. Rolling back odometers is illegal, but it's a scam that's growing. Automotive experts say the best way to protect yourself against hidden problems in used cars is to do your homework before buying. Compare the mileage in the CARFAX Report with the mileage on the odometer. If it doesn't match up, don't buy that car.

  • This what Wal-Mart means by "Rollback America?"

  • That's why you ask for service records when buying a used car. Not only will the service records prove the actual mileage (work orders have the odo reading on them) but if a car is well maintained the mileage really doesn't mean much. People make too much of a deal about mileage alone.

  • Is there any way to find out if its been roled back?

I've seen a 2002 sunatra with 50k clicks on it, is that too good to be true?

  • remember...it's a Federal Crime !

    see you in Levinworth...lol

  • or unless it's a Summer car, or a car the owner just doesn't use very much

  • I am about to buy a 95' supra that has only 50k miles. is this a scam?

  • Generally a good rule to follow with this sort of stuff is "if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is" One a car is over 5 years old, the chances of being able to find one with less than 100,000km's/60'000 miles are slim at best. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking a car that is 10 years old has any less than 100,000km's/60'000 miles because they simply don't exist, unless they're rare or collectibles

  • If you got a newer model vehicle, you tamper with the odometer. you can face fine or jail time. that is called odometer fraud. Please check the laws in your state or country.
