Ionic Bonding, taught by Lewis Octet Rule, although correct, is too simple and induces to think that:
1- Ions are formed from neutral atoms
2- The electrostatic interaction occurs only between two ions
3- Ionic Bonding is unidirectional
4- A molecule is formed

We could say that the goal achieved, when teaching Ionic Bonding by Lewis Octet Rule, is to show that ionic compounds are formed because the ions have octet completed.

A more comprehensive way of teaching the Ionic Bonding, using Coulomb Law, shows that:
1- It is irrelevant to know how the ions were formed
2- Ions are arranged in a three-dimensional crystal structure
3- Each ion interacts electrostatically with all other ions of the crystal structure
4- The resulting electrostatic force on each ion is calculated by Coulomb Law
5- The crystal structure is cohesive because the resulting electrostatic force, calculated for each ion, shows that it is attracted by all other ions
