Learn all about providing solar power to laptops here...
http://www.modernoutpost.com

Putting together a solar powered PC laptop is easy when you have the right parts. This video shows how to build a solar power system for a laptop computer. In this example, we are using a direct connection between a solar storage battery (with multiple voltage settings), and an HP Pavillion laptop.

Equipment used includes...
PowerFilm rollable solar panel
Voltaic Generator multi-voltage lithium battery pack
Solar panel input cable for the Voltaic,
The Voltaic Generator battery pack was set to its 12-20V range, and it auto-selects the voltage within this range that supports charge flowing to the load (ie the HP laptop). In other solar storage battery systems, either the battery has specific voltage settings, or you can use the 12V setting and plug-in a standard car voltage adaptor that connects to the laptop.

For complete information on creating a portable solar power system for your electronics, including digital cameras, camcorders, laptops, iPods, satellite phones, AA batteries, and more, the place to go is Modern Outpost.

  • UPDATE: Voltaic is in the process of redesigning this battery pack in order to enable it to charge more efficiently from solar.

Tekkeon has released a solar input adaptor for their myPower All battery pack, so it is now our leading recommended battery pack for connecting laptops to solar panels. New demonstration videos for the Tekkeon will be posted in the coming days. It connects to solar & laptops in essentially the same way.

  • WELL ,IT WAS NICE ,but u have to show whether laptop is working or not...........

  • @1989Nithin

I will do that in an upcoming video. Rest assured, this battery pack can charge & run most laptops. I have specified it in several systems for expeditions. Adaptors are available from Voltaic Systems to connect it to your laptop (if it doesn't come with the correct one in its default set).

  • That particular battery pack is 55 Watt-Hours, so about the same capacity as a standard laptop (ie would double your normal run time). But, of course you can always use a larger battery pack and match a panel to it that will charge it within a typical summer day. Modern Outpost has larger lithium packs. Most people going into the wild with their laptop only use it for an hour per day at most, so for maximum portability, the smaller battery pack & solar panel is preferred.

  • Brennstoffzellen machen mehr Sinn

  • Would a fuel cell make more sense? No, I disagree. First, the power available from a fuel cell is much less, the cost is vastly higher, and it is not as portable as solar.

  • Hi, I want to use a 255W mono solar panel with MC4 connectors to power a laptop for a trade show. Is this possible?

  • genial

  • Nice video of a laptop there. Keep them coming. Netbooks commonly run at 30Watt and a solar panel of say 60Watt would easily cover that and then some for charging a large battery, like a car battery size. Then a netbook with a ssd hdd could be used as a little server 24/7. Would love to see a video of that. A single core 1.6ghz would run as a minecraft server quite well and a dual-core would play hd youtube 720 and hd bbc iplayer if a kiosk adhering to such a common standard was required. Yeah!!

  • How easy would it be to mount that panel on the back of the laptop and put the converter inside thereby making the computer actually solar powered?

  • hey quick question since you know everything about laptops,

i got me a fx gaming laptop, that wont stay charged more then 15 mins,,

i went out and bought a brand new battery and it only olds 20 mins MAX,

i got windows 7 and i was wondering is my setiings on the laptop too high or somthing please reply and try and help me out,

    thankk youu so MUCH :)

  • How much does it costs?

  • Is that Solar battery a must? Cant we just connect the solar panel directly to the power adapter of the laptop?

  • @girardin1989

It should work fine with these computers. Remember that you DO NOT use your AC (120v or 240v) wall adaptor with these battery packs. The whole point is to eliminate AC power altogether. All laptops operate on DC (ie all battery-operated systems are inherently DC), so we are going straight from the solar battery into your laptop at your laptop's desired voltage. I hope that helps.
