Just a quick video (sped up 2x) to show the program versions included in this release. Nothing has changed tbh, but it's only alpha 3, so it's still got a few to go yet :) Final release of Karmic Koala is October 23rd I think. One day after Windows 7!

  • You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. How about downloading it and testing it out before blurting out dumb remarks. It has quite literally thousands of available apps, many of which are developed by large, successful communities of thousands of programmers and even large companies such as Sun Microsystems. And all of it's free as compared to 300+ dollars for M$ products. Again, you have no idea what you are talking about. Get your facts straight and then try again.

  • There is one big reason not to port to Linux. It's not allowed by Microsoft. Dig into it's history a little and you'll see that every company that has ever crossed them has been destroyed or if it's large enough, left a shadow of it's former self like IBM.

Many companies have open disdain for open source because it's freedom and they feel if they port their software, somehow they'll be supporting the enemy philosophy.

The answer I feel is FOSS community which can provide better software anyway

  • With so many development software there's no reason companies not to port their applications to linux.

My netbook right know runs Xubuntu and i dont change it with anything.

But when comes to job i can't afford spending so much more time for a low quality result just to say hey i made it with linux.

I just want beside with the os development and advances to have software too.

  • Ah, most companies are Windows centric so FOSS is generally a no go. Especially things like graphic design where they are rated not in their skill but in how name brand and latest version their software is. If someday there are enough people using Linux and needing software, there will be enough open source developers to provide superior software to overshadow and replace the licensed software provided by companies. Unless they port it to Linux but most companies have flat out hostility to it.

  • if you wanna surf the net and burn a cd its fine if you were professional you would understand that ubuntu has only poor, primitive apps of no importance.

Until the Big Software Companies think about linux , will not have good software apps.

I have linux on my netbook and its fine for surfing the net , but using it for my job would be impossible or silly !!!

I really like ubuntu linux and i hope it will have softare , WindowsSUCKS - MACOSX RULES and has great apps make the job fast and BETTER

  • Lol With a selection of tens of thousands of packages you say no serious applications? I think if you're doing genetics engineering or calculating the trajectory to the moon you'll write your own custom software anyway.

  • Just don't do like a lot of people and expect it to BE Windows. It's not made by a corporation and provided poor support (you rely on the community for good volunteer support though any problem you have has probably already been answered on the forum) and it's not a drop in replacement so you'll have to learn new things. I started by dual booting, loved it on day 2, never used by Windows partition again by week 2.

  • Indeed, probably the best thing to happen to GNU/Linux and the Free and Open Source Software community.

  • try Kubuntu. its ubuntu, but uses the KDE desktop manager instead of gnome. much better for first time users and has a better 'WOW!' factor.

Gnome IMHO is better for productivity (or enlightenment/fluxbox...) but now im just getting too linuxy :D

  • ubuntu has to be by far the best developed, most user friendly Linux distro out right now. Now, I'm going to get a lot of crap from the linux gurus out there for that comment, but for the average, intermediate user, this can do just about everything you can think of with ease.

it also has a gui (graphical interface) for just about everything, so it's easier to transition to. you won't have to dive into much code/command prompt at all for most of what you will probably use it for.

  • thanks :)

ill definatly give it shot monday...thanks again :)
