When Gloriika was 16 days old a little red mark appeared on her right cheek. I knew that it was not just a regular rash . When she was about 5 weeks old it started to grow.It was diagnosed as hemangioma (temporary birthmark) We had about 7 laser treatment and 9 steroid injections in about 8 months period, but it would not help her much.
We seen many many specialists , but nothing was helping. We started to see Dr.Allison Vidimos in Cleveland Clinic hospital, because she was most experienced doctor with hemangiomas around here . She began to do painful laser treatments when my daughter was 3 months old, but it was not helping infect it was growing more rapidly. It was blocking her vision, and it grew a little inside of Gloriika's nose. I was always asking if there any, and I mean anything else that we could do, and she was keep saying "no", well except steroids by mouth which we did say no to ! But thanks God we found dr. Kate Puttgen in John hopkins hospital.
And when I called dr.Vidimos to ask if she knew about this treatment, she sad that she did knew, but did not think that we had really bad case of hemangioma to do a propranolol treatment, because "she sad" propranolol has really bad side effect and they just had conference with cardiology professor and he tolled them not to use this medicine, only in extreme cases.
So then I started to do my research, and went to see a cardiologist in cleveland clinic, and cardiologist sad that this medicine has no side effects on kids after 1 months of age, and it been used for kids in over 30 years. So I have no idea why dr Vidimos did not tell us about this treatment.I guess it was more money/laser/ question for her then helping people !And if she would started using this treatment on m daughter when she was 2-4 months old, her hemangioma would be gone by now!
We went to Baltimore to see Dr. Kate Puttgen on 10/1/09 and she prescribed propranolol treatment for 6 months. And now 5 months later hemangioma is gone by about 80% ,my daughters nose is completely clear and she hes 100% vision on the right eye :)
Thank you so so much dr Puttgen :)
