The most common way to become a career pilot is to spend about $60k to be a flight instructor. This allows you to build hours without costing you more money. You need several hours of flight before you can make enough to start paying back loans. Flight schools know you need the hours and they pay you only enough to survive, all while interest is building on your loans. You need about 2500 hrs to get a job that actually pays.like transporting ppl to offshore rigs/scenic flight in alaska $45k

Good point which is true in some cases, but We have students looking at spending 45K for all their ratings.None of our students has a "loan" We discourage high interest loans-learn part-time work full-time You need between 1000-1500 hours before jumping to your first job beyond CFI. Less when the economy is good, more when it's not. Supply and demand works for helicopter pilots too. Some flight schools may exploit pay scales. We start at $20-30/hr. Or work in an office. Or go Army.
