Richard Taylor (winner of five Academy Awards), head of Weta Workshop at the Wellington Armageddon Pulp Culture con (20-April-2008) shows that Weta are still incredibly enthusiastic about the possibility of help making a live action movie adaption of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

In 2003 ADV Films announced that in partnership with GAINAX and Weta Workshop that a live action movie adaption of the Japanese anime Neon Genesis Evangelion was to be produced. Unfortunately a downturn in the R1 region anime goods sales has resulted in ADV finding it difficult to come up with the required funds for the project and it has seemingly been put on indefinite hold.

Richard did also make mention that if everything had gone to plan the movie (first of three perhaps?) would have been out around the same time the Transformers movie was released.

  • God, I hope to God that the Evangelion movie is made and done right. I LOVE Evangelion, and this would be awesome along with the Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell movies coming out.

  • if their CGI can handle more or equal to the transformers, i mean as realistic as that,. then i think Evangeliion will never become a mess,..

  • @Testingpointer1 Evangelion, Tsumanis of blood in blueray 3 dimension, Please turn away during the angel deaths lest your eyes burn out

  • I think it's best that it isn't made. Hollywood has shown time and again that it doesn't take this sort of stuff seriously, and probably wouldn't put much effort into it.

  • Animation already has sound and movement what would having a live action version actually add? If you want to see the story of Eva its been done at least 3 times already why do we need to see it again?

  • @angelemon94 200% AGREED

  • i hope its not another dragonball evolution

  • HAHAHA I think I'll be a film director just to correct the shit these people are about to make XDXD

  • (continued from previous post) it* is appropriate to have them at that age and be nude, will be a subject of debate, the characters psychological and social thinking to fit the character would be quite hard for a 14-16 year old to portray and accurately present themselves, is hard, but not impossible, if the many the majority of teenagers can watch this anime and truly understand its emotions and have a desire to portray them, then there is no reason to disregard the ages of 14-16!

  • early 20's? Man i think you truly are diminishing the artistic, and acting ability of a 14 year old, sure they can older, but early 20's? you'll have to find a short 20 year old to play shinji! the movie would not look right if everyone didn't appear to be the age they are supposed to be, think about it, a 20 year old shinji who is the same height as his dad and is clearly smaller in the anime, wouldn't work. And i'll be direct, if its nudity, regarding the ages of the pilots, and whether its...

  • @GrievousCommander Agree on the trilogy, agree on Rei having to be albine, agree on the pilots having to be maybe in their early 20s rather than 14 etc, but I'm not so sure on the completely blue hair bit. I mean, wouldn't black hair with a slight blue-ish hint be good and realistic enough?

  • I think there waiting for the rebuild movies to finish or they just can't find a director to buy into the fact that it might tank at the box office
