In my opinion, there was no song before "Helter Skelter" that so clearly exhibited all the musical characteristics that we associate with modern-day heavy metal.
And, yes, I shouldn't have said "single-handedly." One, because the rest of the band kind of helped him out with the composition of the music, per se, and two, because he was, of course, prompted to write "Helter Skelter" on a kind of musical dare that consisted in writing the loudest, dirtiest-sounding rock song.
