During the Bahamas Grand Prix, held on Sunday, 11 December 1983 in the boat course between Nassau and Paradise Island, Bahamas, Kenny Stevenson's catamaran powerboat flipped and cartwheeled while he was leading the race. Stevenson was thrown from the boat and broke his neck, being killed on the spot. The race was a round of the 1983 UIM Formula 2 Powerboat Championship.
Kenny Stevenson, a 36 year-old powerboat racing champion from Mentor, Ohio, was leading the third heat when his boat became airborne. He was a well known and experienced boat driver, in 1982 he had his debut in the UIM Formula 1 Powerboat Championship, scoring a 5th place at Minneapolis and a 6th place in the London Grand Prix.
Winner of the Bahamas Grand Prix was John Mills, 1982 Formula 2 vice-champion.

Drivers weren't secured it seems from the driver flying out of the boat. It was around the time that Unlimited Hydroplanes were having fatal crashes where drivers began to be strapped into their boats, and around 1985 was when the F-16 canopy debuted in that class. If it took place in a modern boat, the driver would have just walked away thanks to modern safety harnesses, the enclosed canopy, and HANS device.
