Senator Claire McCaskill spoke about the need to enact the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which overturns the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, undermining the basic protection against pay discrimination under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.
The legislation restores the clear intent of Congress that workers must have a reasonable time to file a pay discrimination claim after they become victims of discriminatory compensation.
McCaskill also discussed the absurdity of a Senate procedural maneuver that allows any one Senator to block a nomination anonymously, which held up four of President Obama's women appointees.
I agree with everything she says. However, I do not think that these problems a solvable through legislation. Too much of the discrimination is systemic, and sometimes even unconscious.
But fight the good fight on all fronts. Especially, we need to teach our children correctly, so that the next generation can look back and wonder how we could have been so backward.
