Occasional bouts of heartburn are nothing to worry about. But if you get it frequently you're at a higher risk of developing Barrett's esophagus which in rare cases can lead to esophageal cancer. Doctors at Mayo Clinic have studied a new treatment for Barrett's that may significantly reduce your chances of developing esophageal cancer.

  • Is Mayo the only place we can get this particular treatment? After being diagnosed with Barrett's, my doctor decided to continue the same treatment I've been on for the last 10 years, which is 40mg of Omeprazole. I am afraid since I developed Barrett's in the first place, that it's only going to progress unless I take new steps.

  • Both radiofrequency ablation [RFA] and cryotherapy [cryo] are used for endoscopic treatment of Barretts in the proper setting. Many medical centers and certain private practices throughout the United States offer them. Continued

  • Cont. from comment #1: If you search the Internet or contact a medical society such as the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy you should get information. The companies that make RFA and cryo products may also be helpful.
