well, by the end of the cold war, US had nothing on Su-27 and especially Mig-31, so, the myth about soviets using numbers over quality is not accurate. Also notable is how Mig-23s fared against F-16s in Syria, in BVR combat.
I'd say soviets had both quantity AND quality (Mig-25, Mig-31, Su-27 are of course examples of quality).

Soviet airpower - Quantity has a quality of its own. Over 2000 'Fishbeds' were active at any given time within the warsaw pact lands from the '60s to the end of the cold war.
