I was at this show. 16 years old and my very 1st concert. A band called The Soft Machine were supposed to open but didn't. Got lousy seats but quickly left them and made my way down to the very front of the stage. 10 feet from Jimi, Wailing away, burning his strat with lighter fluid. Unfucking beleivable! Hearing this 42 years later is almost overwhelming. Thank you for posting the soundtrack to an experience that changed my life.
I was there that night but the Stones weren't. Cat Mother & the All-Night Newsboys opened (produced by Jimi Hendrix), followed by the Infinite Mcoys (nee the McCoys) with Rick Derringer on guitar. Soft Machine was scheduled to play but they didn't. I was in Loge Section A Row 1, one of the closest seats to Jimi (on stage right [audience left]). Jimi looked very skinny and clean; his Afro was cut in a perfect round shape. BTW, I paid $5.50 for the best seat in the house!
This is the night he opened for the Rollin Stones!! His encore was the star spangled banner with everyone standing which about 2/3 of the way through he broke into Wild Thing. Wont forget! he lit his guitar on fire at the very end.
Jimi started by saying he would take it easy on our ears that night then he launched into "Fire" very loudly. It sounded excellent from where I sat. He played with great feeling. Listen to how he plays with teeth here at the end of Purple Haze. Even that was done very well with feeling. Noel Redding kind of leaned against his amps during the show. Jimi humped the crap out of his amps. The set list posted does not mention that he also did an encore of Wild Thing that night.
I was 15 when I went to this show. I made the mistake of smoking way too much just before I went inside the Boston Garden. Talk about an unreal experience! I appreciate it so much that you posted this! I can now listen to it without being so high. Rick Derringer did play but for some reason I thought he played with the McCoys and The Soft Machine were separate that night? Perhaps too much pot!
Actually that was 45 years ago. Wow!

Killer version.
If we had better sound I feel confident this would be considered one of Jimi's best ever performances of 'Purple Haze'.
