Niles did leave his wife, and Daphne did leave her fiancee. This gives them a chance to rebalance their karma before they can be happy together. Karma is important for TV - audiences wouldn't stand a jerk with an easy life or a good person with a miserable life. Not for long, anyway. Remember, these two got together in large part because people wrote to the producers, complaining that Niles's suffering had gone on long enough. Everyone ends up as happy as they deserve, except Donny.

I love the episodes when Daphne and Niles finally get together... I find them charming...I LOVE Niles... awesome character, awesome show.

I still watch this show every night. The writing, timing and actors were so good... nothing compares to it. The newer shows just can't hold a candle to it, thank goodness for reruns.

In 'real life', Daphne and Niles would be totally doomed. Because when you bulldoze over other people-- as Daphne and Niles both did - your union will not be blessed. Niles was especially rotten. Saying "I Do" to a woman, and dumping her four days later. No, not nice at all.

@okchoebag The writers are poking fun at psychiatrists. They are showing that these 'doctors' who supposedly 'fix their patients', are just as messed-up as their patients, maybe more. It's irony. It is Similar to Lisa Kudrow's show, Web Therapy, which also makes fun of shrinks.

I understand the pain of Donny and Mel. I hate when people leave others at the altar and Mel's situation is my worst nightmare. Somehow, I still could care less because everyone always has the choice to take the high road which Donny and Mel are not taking. Plus after 7 damn seasons of anticipation and all the beautiful chemistry between Niles and Daphne this is my favorite part of the series.
